LISA FISCHER + GRAND BATON

Montclair Jazz Festival

After four decades of background singing with icons like Luther Vandross, The Rolling Stones, Chaka Khan and Tina Turner, vocalist extraordinaire Lisa Fischer set out to take center stage with her own humble, heartfelt song. The 2013 film Twenty Feet from Stardom altered the course of Fischer’s musical journey, so Fischer took the chance to set out on her own reinventing classic songs with her group Grand Baton. Together they’ve gathered a far-ranging repertoire of songs, including many tunes she’d made her own during his backup years. “Grand Baton gave me my wings,” Fischer says. “They give me permission to do whatever I want.” Their organic fusion of Caribbean psychedelic soul and jazzy progressive rock ignited Fischer’s flexibility and freedom of expression, awakening her lifelong desire to make music that heals but still rocks the house.  While Fischer’s range is legendary, her greatest gift is the ability to reach the hearts of her listeners. With her infinite textures, shades and hues, combined with the bountiful soul, affectionate humor and exquisite taste that defines her music, Lisa Fischer leads listeners to whole new universes of her own design.
